Electricity Storage System

Tukums CSDD BESS 108 kWh Electricity Storage System

The Road Traffic Safety Directorate (CSDD) has implemented green energy improvements at its customer service center in Tukums, located at 9A Vilkājas Street. The facility already had energy-efficient heat pumps and a solar power plant to generate electricity from renewable sources. But to make it all work even more efficiently, we added an electricity storage system, or BESS, as the ideal complement – it's like a big "battery" for the building that optimizes the work of solar panels and heat pumps, allowing for smart energy use and savings throughout the year.

What is BESS and how does it work?

BESS works as a smart addition to solar power plants and heat pumps. Solar panels only generate electricity when the sun is shining, but heat pumps consume energy constantly. BESS stores excess solar energy during the day and saves it for use in the evenings, at night, or on cloudy days. This ensures that the entire system works harmoniously – solar energy is not wasted, and the heat pump receives a stable supply.

  • Technical Section: The BESS is installed under a canopy on the pavement, with an inverter capacity of 50 kW and a battery capacity of 108 kWh – this means that it can store enough electricity to power the building for several hours. The BESS is connected in parallel to the solar power plant system and operates automatically.
  • Smart Management with AI: The system is controlled by artificial intelligence (AI), which "thinks" for itself. AI looks at weather conditions, total energy consumption and, most importantly, electricity prices on the Nord Pool exchange. For example, if the price on the exchange is low (at night or during cheap periods), the AI charges the batteries from the grid. But if the price is high, it discharges the stored energy so as not to buy expensive electricity.

How does BESS save money?

BESS isn't just "green" technology – it actually lowers our bills and even makes money! Here's how:

  • Save Cheaply, Use Wisely: Solar energy is free, but we store it for use when electricity prices on the exchange are high. For example, in the middle of the day, the sun produces a surplus – BESS stores it for the evening when prices rise. This way, we avoid expensive purchases from the grid.
  • Stock Exchange Price Optimization: AI tracks Nord Pool prices in real time. When prices fall (e.g., at night), the system charges cheaply. When prices rise, it sells or uses the stored energy, reducing costs by up to tens of percent per year. Especially in winter, when there is little or no sun, BESS still makes money – AI buys electricity from the grid during cheap night-time periods, stores it, and then discharges or sells it on the exchange at higher prices during the day when demand is high. This means that the system not only saves money, but also generates income even without the help of the sun!
  • Less Dependence on the Network: We buy less electricity from the grid, so we pay less for transmission. Plus, it protects against price fluctuations – if everything becomes expensive on the exchange, we have our own "reserve fund" in our batteries.

As a result, we save money while reducing CO₂ emissions and promoting a green lifestyle.

Other Advantages

  • Reliability: The system is safe, complies with all EU standards, and comes with a 10-year warranty.
  • Environmentally Friendly: We help the planet by using more renewable energy.
  • Future Plans: This is just the beginning – we are planning similar projects at other sites.
